TMC writes to poll body seeking action against ‘foreign nationals’ at BJP rally in Gujarat

The Trinamool Congress has written to the Election Commission demanding action against ‘foreign nationals’ seen during a BJP rally in Gujarat.

Saket Gokhale, national spokesperson of Trinamool Congress (TMC), has written to the Election Commission demanding action against the ‘foreign nationals’ who were seen campaigning for the BJP in Gujarat.

“It has come to light through an official video uploaded by the Twitter account of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Gujarat, where certain foreign nationals have been shown campaigning for the BJP wearing the party’s scarves and speaking how the people of Gujarat should vote for the BJP,” Saket Gokhale wrote in his complaint to the poll body.

“This tantamounts to serious foreign interference in Indian elections and is completely in violation of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, as well as the visa laws of India,” he added.

In a video shared by the Gujarat BJP, a few individuals ostensibly of foreign origin can be seen campaigning for the saffron party and lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s work.

India Today could not independently establish the nationality of the individuals seen in the video tweeted by the BJP.

The TMC leader alleged that the BJP is not only engaging in serious violations of electoral laws but is also “brazenly allowing foreign interference in free and fair elections”.

“The Election Commission of India is, therefore, requested to immediately initiate action on this complaint considering the seriousness of the matter as well as notify the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) in Gujarat to take urgent action under immigration law against foreign nationals campaigning for a political party,” Gokhale said in his letter.
